Restoration project for the Convent Complex in Lugo (Emilia-Romagna)

In May 2023, Emilia-Romagna region was hit by a severe flood that caused extensive damage in several municipalities in the region. In Lugo, many buildings suffered the effects of the flood, including the S. Giuseppe Institute, owned by the Congregation of the Sisters “Daughters of St Francis of Sales”. The building, used as a religious institute and residence for nuns, is part of the St. Joseph Complex, which also houses a kindergarten, primary and secondary school. The effects of the flood affected the building on both the exterior surfaces and the interior spaces, as water entered the ground floor spaces. The action of water caused multiple degradation phenomena to form, which on the exterior manifested themselves mainly in the form of the presence of moisture, disintegration of masonry, and the formation of rust and stains. The interiors, on the other hand, were subject to detached plaster, rotting on wooden elements, erosion of stone elements, cracks on decorations. The aim of the project was to restore integrity to the building. In order to do this, for each degradation, targeted remedial measures have been designed that include pre-consolidation, cleaning, consolidation and finishing phases, aimed at the structural and aesthetic recovery of the building, the containment of humidity and the elimination of decay.
