Strengthening the REgional ECOlogical Network

The environmental redevelopment project in the Bagnacavallo Cemetery and Podere Pantaleone area aims to improve ecological and landscape quality by promoting sustainability, biodiversity and sustainable water management.
The project is based on a clear idea: to move from a model of isolated natural areas-true “islands” immersed in the man-made fabric-to an organic network of interconnected natural spaces, an “ecological archipelago” capable of providing continuity for the habitats and species that live there. To do this, we aim to increase the permeability of soils by removing asphalt on the cemetery driveway and in the Pieve parking lot to create draining surfaces and reduce sealing. Targeted felling of compromised trees, new plantings with native and climate-adapted species for better greenery management are planned in addition to upgrading the bike path on Pieve Street with draining materials and creating rain garden beds to collect rainwater. With the aim of fostering sustainable accessibility, a new bicycle and pedestrian connection is created between the cemetery and Podere Pantaleone, with an earthen ramp and bike parking area. There are also plans to build a rospoduct for the safe crossing of wildlife, particularly amphibians, under Pieve Masiera Street.
A key aspect of the project is the expansion and renaturalization of Podere Pantaleone through the acquisition and greening of an adjoining area with new trees, hedges and a small natural pond to foster wetland habitats. This is an integrated project that aims to combine urban regeneration, ecological connectivity and climate change adaptation.
